PLM President is Doctor of Laws

27 February 2014

Cited for his selfless commitment, brilliance and depth of vision as a highly esteemed legal luminary and a rare educational leader, Dr. Artemio G. Tuquero was conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by the Urdaneta City University.

Strongly endorsed by the Academic Council and the Board of Regents through their respective resolutions, this honor is “in recognition of Dr. Tuquero's distinguished public service, outstanding contribution to legal education and boundless passion for academic excellence,” states the citation.

For his sterling record, Tuquero “is worthy of exemplary commendation due to his meritorious  contributions and incomparable performance as Associate Justice in the Court of Appeals, Chief Prosecutor of the National Prosecution Service and his most significant contributions as Secretary of Justice,” the Academic Council resolution explains. Further, this is in acknowledgement of his “remarkable academic feat and his notable passion for the academe.”

The conferment rites saw luminaries of equal caliber taking turns in delivering their testimonials, including former senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani (on behalf of ambassador Amadeo R. Perez, Jr., chairman of Manila Economic & Cultural Office), Court of Appeals justices Japar B. Dimaampao and Myra V. Garcia-Fernandez, and lawyer Carlos M. Carlos, PLM board secretary and chief legal counsel.

On hand to lead the conferment rites was the mayor of Urdaneta City. Mayor Amadeo Gregorio E. Perez IV, chair of the UCU board of regents, led the city council, headed by vice mayor Franco Paolo SJ del Prado, Sr., in honoring the amiable justice with the degree.

Momentous as the event was, the vice mayor warmly welcomed everyone, while the full regential slate led the reading of the board resolution, hooding and capping. University president Dr. Elizabeth A. Montero read the citation and awarded the diploma, while alumni-regent Dr. Virgilio U. Manzado inducted Tuquero into the alumni association as the newest alumnus of UCU.
