August 22 -- Sandra Mei Branzuela, who recently graduated from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila with B.S. Chemistry degree in April this year, bagged the top prize in the college category of Sibol Award for Student Creative Research at the finals of the National Invention Contest and Exhibit (NICE). The national finals were held from August 14 to 16, 2018 at the Le Pavillon Metropolitan Park in Pasay City. The contest is an annual event sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology.

Branzuela's winning entry entitled "Flame Emission Photometric Determination of Iron via Digital Imaging-Based Detection" was the top-prize winner at the 2017 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibit (RICE) for the National Capital Region. There were seventeen entries representing each region.

This is the second time that a PLM student won the top prize at the National Invention Contest and Exhibit. The first time was in 1995 with Leah Mesina's research entitled "Starch from Sweet Potato as Filler for the Production of Biodegradable Plastic".
